Stocks and Election Thoughts and Elon Musk

  • Since I last blogged, the stock market went into a bear market. It remains stuck! Every rally attempt has been beaten down by the bears, chief among them Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell. He’s been on a relentless interest rate hike to tame the beast of inflation.
  • Too much money chasing too few goods.” All the covid stimulus, including the stimulus checks, eviction moratoriums, halting student debt repayments, rates near 0%, and government deficit spending and various bills (infrastructure, “inflation reduction act”), juiced spending and inflated asset prices. Meanwhile, the pandemic itself has led to economic shutdowns and supply chain shortages around the globe. And did I mention a war in Europe? Russia invading Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions has driven up the costs of oil and natural gas, while putting pressure on things like fertilizer, wheat, and other things.
  • As rates go up, stock market valuations have come down. In addition, corporate earnings reports have been lackluster and future guidance has been poor. We are also seeing companies announce hiring freezes and layoffs. This could accelerate going forward.
  • California’s tax revenues are coming in light! To be expected, as California receives a lot of tax revenue from a small number of people and companies, and if earnings are down and capital gains are non-existent, tax revenues will fall short.  So much for the budget surplus of yesteryear!
My thoughts on it all: I’m 100% invested and have ridden the bear market down. I continue to add to positions and reallocate to stocks and sectors that I think will do well going forward. I’m not chasing the hot stocks and sectors that have outperformed during the bear market. I’m more interested in tech and growth that will outperform once the bear market ends and the new bull market unfolds. Patience… Patience… Patience…

  • Elon Musk takes over Twitter, and immediately announces layoffs and upcoming changes to the platform. There are a lot of “hot takes” on how this is going and how this will play out. My hot take is that he makes a lot of changes, the changes are mostly well-received over time, and he takes Twitter public again as a hot IPO. Or maybe I’m just borrowing that hot take from something I read on Twitter!
  • NFL Sunday! Another day to remind me that my fantasy football team is a bunch of hits and mostly misses week to week! But at least the Dolphins have a fun offense to watch again.
  • Election hot take: I don’t know. Generic polls seem mostly useless, as most House districts are gerrymandered. Maybe the polls have more value in statewide elections. Polls seem close for the Senate. GOP might get the House. I think the GOP does well in local races that are out of the national spotlight.
  • The Senate races are going to be close and contested. I’m not an election denier or believe cheating was found in 2020. But, I’m not sure our election systems aren’t designed to allow cheating by both sides. I just don’t know how they would do it, or do do it. We have so many different voting systems around the 50 states, different rules and laws, precincts, polling locations, drop boxes and mail-in ballots. We don’t have voter ID. Signature validation software is sketchy. Again, I don’t think any cheating was found in 2020.

Uh Oh

  • $SPY - Well. I bought the dip, too. Doesn't look like that will break even for awhile.  I still have some cash so now I'm thinking ... Hmm, maybe wait a bit on that.
  • No recession due to a spike in oil prices.  No inverted yield curve. Profits at record highs. Interest rates at their lows and very little inflation.  GDP still positive. Two hour lines at Disney.  So this sell off is probably a correction and not a Great Recession.
  • I liked Fear the Walking Dead. Slow build but that's what it is supposed to be. Heck, in the Walking Dead, Rick is only in a coma for a little while when he wakes up and society is toast.
  • So... At least I bought stocks of companies not going away.  Disney.  Facebook.   Apple.  JNJ.   Maybe they don't go up in a V move, but not worried over the long term.
  • Havent watched too much preseason NFL.  Hard to get into it versus streaming Netflix shows.

Been on vacation a lot this month. LOL.

OMG - Stocks Have Down Day

  • OMG! Stocks had a down day! PANIC!
  • Oil prices dropping puts money in consumers wallets.  Consumers spend more at malls.  Inflation coming?
  • So I am a big believer of a little pullback and then a big end of year uptrend - especially in the stock leaders.
  • Stock pullback could be due to tax loss selling of some losers or a news headline, but money will want to rally in the leaders into the year end. IMHO.
  • The Miami Dolphins are usually fantastic at blowing must win games against lousy teams.
  • Minimum wages increasing, which will end up pushing up other wages. Many wages are based in formulas and salary surveys of other wages. Raising the floor pushes everything else up.  Inflation coming?
  • I didn't go to the malls or do any online shopping. None!  Might take a vacation for Christmas and avoid the gift giving nonsense!
  • Spoiler alert: I was sad Beth died last night in The Walking Dead.  Just saying.
  • The Jets have over 200 yards rushing IN THE FIRST HALF!
  • One reason for the drop in oil and other commodities is the strong dollar.  Oil is denominated in dollars.
  • Hey, the strong dollar means that goods produced overseas should cost less. Including imported oil. Hey, that should be good for the trade imbalance!  That could put downward pressure on inflation but we tend to spend all we have, so probably not.

Sunday Night Market Thoughts

  • My portfolio is still in cash as the market (er, SP500) makes new highs.  That's a great feeling, right?
  • So I've ignored the last few trips the market has made to the 50dma.
  • I don't yet have a strategy to dollar cost averaging back into the market or going all in.  Still thinking about it.  Probably dollar cost average in if we don't have some sort of pullback soon, and if in the process of doing that we get a correction, go all in.  Just thinking out loud...
  • The black box has been okay on the little moves lately, but haven't been following it.  LOL.  I know - then what's the use!?!?!
  • One thing I am looking forward to this week is the Apple news on new iPads.  I'm debating between a new iPad or to go the Windows Surface Pro route.  I have an iPad - I'm doing this entry using the BlogTouch app.  So maybe leading to a Windows tablet.  I dunno.  Or neither.  LOL.  I don't actually need one, it's just the NEW TOY thing.
  • My feet?  Thanks for asking.  Still sore but improving oh-so-slowly from week to week.
  • My fantasy football teams are good, but I'm near last place. Why?  I keep playing the top scoring team of the week.  So even if I'm scoring a lot, I keep playing the guy who is scoring MORE.  Good grief.
  • The government is going to release the economic data that it held hostage during the government shut down.  That could be market moving.  I don't think things are that well.  I guess it doesn't matter as long as the Fed is inflating asset prices by printin' money.
  • Any commercial that plays the Best Friend theme song from the Courtship of Eddie's Father always gets me to watch.  And then I sing the tune non-stop for the rest of the day.  Can't get it out of my head!
  • Anyway, October is flying buy.

Market Thoughts

The market continues to advance as we wait for news from Ben Bernanke on what the heck is going to happen with the QE program.

My guess is that there is very little if any change at all.  The economic numbers haven't been that great.  My fear is that all the QE has inflated real estate and stock prices more than it has helped most Americans.  (Except for those of us who own homes and stocks, right?)

Anyway, it's past mid-September and I'm still in cash.  Sell in May and miss the Summer rally!

The Summer Market Correction

Looks like the summer market sell off finally appeared.  There is always some reason du jour.  Is it really Syria?  Is it earnings or economic numbers?  The Fed easing its QE - the taper?

Whatever it is, folks are selling.  And some of the bears are being paraded around on TV with dire forecasts.

I remain in cash and looking for an entry point probably Sept-Oct time frame.

Cash is King

I am still in cash and not trading the market or taking long positions. Even though I have been in cash for awhile and have missed the run up from the SP500 1500s to 1700s, I believe that summers can be a little rocky and weak. But that hasn't happened this year just yet.  We shall see.

Lots of concern about what the Fed will do and when they will do it.  That is almost always the case, but with Quantitative Easing for about $85B a month, this is going to have an pact when they do ease the purchase program.

Anyway, should be an interesting August and September. Watching and waiting...

Bernanke Slams QE3 Hopes; Why is Oil so Expensive?

Quick Market Thoughts

The stock market had been strong this week, but showed a little weakness today. There are lots of news stories floating by. Apple's earnings were amazing. Netflix is the comeback kid. But there have also been a few misses. Europe and Greece and such are still there, but largely ignored this week. The Fed says they're going to keep interest rates low half-way through the 2nd Obama term, or 2014. The President is promising free student loans and cheap refinancing for all.

The stock market looks tired to me. I think we're due for a pullback The Black Box has re-iterated a sell signal. If I was scaling out of stocks, I'd have three sell points at this point

I have reduced my long positions by about 20%, which leaves me - tada! lets do the math together - about 80% long. But I could sell more at any point. Or go back long. Or put the cash on a super bowl bet.

Hmmm.... Does everyone love the New York Giants and the points? Might lean the other way.
