Ashes, Ashes, We all fall Down!

  • So I was in Las Vegas justa few weeks ago, and it was packed.  Very crowded.  Things looked great.  Then I read today that Las Vegas Sands is crumbling.  And see that shares of $LVS are down HUGE over recent prices. Shares of Las Vegas Sands Corp. crumbled more than 33% Thursday and another 15% Friday after the casino company said it will likely violate debt covenants this quarter, raising the specter that it might not survive the current economic crisis.
  • The blame goes to the economy, folks in Vegas spending less, China putting restrictions on, etc.  Pretty dramatic.
  • Is Obama the return of John F. Kennedy's CamelotBut how did the stock market perform during Kennedy's administration? Did it really perform all that well?  ... From when Kennedy was inaugurated in January 1961 to his assassination in November 1963, the Dow produced a 4.6% annualized return, below its long-term average return. If the Dow were to produce the same return over the next four years, the Dow on election day in November 2012 would only be at the 10,406 level -- still almost four thousand points below its all-time high.
  • Inspiring, eh?  Kind of makes me feel like "spending it while you've got it."  Worse comes to worse down the road, we can all get in soup lines together.
  • (I'm not really that pessimistic about the economy, by the way. Just hopping on the bandwagon.  Staying the course, but maybe cutting some monthly expenses just to increase the rainy day fund, right?)
  • Should we be investing in China?  High growth, and high domestic demand lead the reasons.  I say...  Yes, as part of a diversified international portolio.
  • Eliza Dushku will be starring in Dollhouse, starting February 13th.  So you know.  The trailer only hints at it, but the show's premise is that a business in Los Angeles has several "workers" whose memories and personalities can be reprogrammed to meet a customer's needs. One of the workers, played by Eliza Dushku (of 'Buffy/Angel' fame), begins to remember things even after the memory wipe, leading to conflict with the company.
  • The Obama news conference is coming.  CNBC is anticipating this like a kid going to Disneyland, which they're not because the economy sucks.
