Market Thoughts (and Tricia Helfer!)

  • So what is the status of this stock market? We've been in the 2nd-longest bull market in history.  The market bottomed in October 2002, and after a rally and then correction in March 2003, has been in a strong uptrend.  We've only seen a few corrections since.  We're here at new highs on the SP500 and one would expect that investors would feel bullish and optimistic.  However, this isn't the case.  We've read more about "sell in May" this year than I can remember in years past.  We have constant Bush bashing and ridiculing of the economy, even with unemployment at 4.5%.  We have fears of inflation, even with inflation at 2.6%.   There's a wall of unjustified worry out there that this market keeps scaling.  And yes, I'm still worried about a summer correction, too!
  • I remain conservatively positioined with low beta holdings, some QID, cash, and a few mo-mo names.  I plan on increasing the short-term trading with the cash positions as long as the market is behaving.  What I don't want to do is fall into the trap of blogging about how I'm right and the market is wrong.  If the market is fighting against investor pessimism and making gains, the right side to be on is the long side.
  • The executive producers of Sci Fi Channel's "Battlestar Galactica," which will kick off its fourth and final season next year, said plans for the show's demise have been in the works for more than a year.   "We thought, if we don't start paying this off and really revealing those secrets, we'll be moving in the wrong direction and get to a place where it felt like we were jerking off the audience," Moore said during a conference call with reporters Friday, a day after they announced the hit show would end.   With Tricia Helfer and Grace Park, many in the audience may be jerking off already.
  • Apple's iPhone to go on sale June 29th.  I wonder if every teenager will be demanding that their parents buy them one?  I think it's an expensive phone that does less than what other smart phones do, but good marketing and useability will beat better technology every time.  I love my Windows phone for calls, music, and web stuff, but I do have to reboot it frequently.
  • The Democrats got together last night and had a debate.  I didn't watch it, but did catch a few video clips on the web.  Obama sounded a lot better this time than the last debate.  Edwards didn't do well.  Hillary held her own.  None of the others even matter, as they're just fighting for the VP slot.  I get this feeling Hillary is going to run away with it on that side of the aisle.
  • Now that President Bush is talking up climate change like it was his idea in the first place, bad news out of ChinaChina went on the global warming offensive on Monday, unveiling a climate change action plan while stressing it will not sacrifice economic ambitions to international demands to cut greenhouse gas pollution.   So I guess the war on climate change was over before it even began.
  • Paris Hilton starts serving her jail term.
  • Oh, Tricia Helfer has a blog.  (Nude, naked, topless, blonde, stripping, smoking, panties, playboy).  And she is selling autographed copies of her Playboy magazine shoot.  For those of you ...in the audience.
