Randoms (and Alyssa Milano!)

  • 2008 election chatter... If we can't vote for brains, maybe we can vote for beauty.  Alyssa Milano hits the campaign circuit.  (Well, not exactly.  But it's a thought.)
  • It's definitely another good day for the marketsU.S. stocks were solidly higher Friday afternoon, after the Dow Jones Industrial Average earlier notched yet another record in the wake of reports showing more jobs were created in May than expected while inflation fell into the Federal Reserve's comfort zone.  "The real key to today's rally is the fact that inflation pressures were contained," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Avalon Partners. "Commodities prices are rising, but it is not showing up."
  • Employment is strong.  Inflation is tame.  These are the good times.  Even the housing correction seems to be contained so far.  (Except for those who got caught up late in the game in risky loans).  The biggest complaint I hear from folks is extreme frustration at Nintendo for not releasing enough new games for the Wii.  Which is probably reflected in George Bush's approval numbers.
  • It figures President Bush would start talking about climate change AFTER global warming has been debunkedClimate change will be considered a joke in five years time, meteorologist Augie Auer told the annual meeting of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers in Ashburton this week.   Man's contribution to the greenhouse gases was so small we couldn't change the climate if we tried, he maintained.
  • This is timely:  5 little-known tips for getting better gas mileage.  I like the first one, "Hitchhike:  Use somebody else's fuel."  OK, that's not really there.  And you'll be disappointed if you're looking for "Star Trek transporters."  But what is there is stuff like "ditch the SUV" and to shop around for fuel prices.  C'mon.  I don't think any of these things will help in the short term, and in the longer term people will demand hybrid cars.  Or transporters.
  • Here's a better checklist from ContraHour:  A checklist for spotting bubble tops.  Do you think China is a stock bubble?
  • The spelling-bee champion Evan O’Dorney was homeschooled.  From Michelle.
  • Kind of funny, but will Trent Green wear a Dolphins helmet at the Chiefs mini-camp?
  • Once and Future PE multiples from Paul Kedrosky.  So is the market overvalued... hmm....
  • Randoms and True Deep Calls from Adam.  So here's my theory. The market rallies on every number now. It's either good for the economy, or good for keeping the Fed from raising rates. Doesn't matter what the actual number is.  Yup. Everything is another reason to buy.
  • Researchers find 2100 year old melon... and make a smoothie.  OK, not really; but, the melon did still have preserved flesh on it.
  • Oops.  I almost forgot!  Alyssa Milano (nude, naked, topless, charmed, panties, smoking, stripping, bikini, President).  She likes baseball.  Kind of charming, eh?
